Topiary 2020

Tasting notes
Wine
This wine suggests aromas of black fruits such as blackberries, black cherry, and currant. One may sense a bit of vanilla and fig. These sensations also carry through to the palate where ripe, light tannins help give the wine a soft velvety mouthfeel. The wine maintains a black bramble fruit finish, with even a hint of dark chocolate, that lingers nicely.

Production notes
Production
This Topiary blend is predominantly Cabernet Franc, a wine variety that grows and shows very well here in Virginia. Since we harvest different clones and vineyard blocks dependent upon their individual ripening times, these grapes were picked over an almost two-week timeframe, from September 28 to October 10. As is typical, the Merlot was harvested earlier, from September 19 to 25, while the Petit Verdot lingered on the vine until October 7. This was a bit later for these varieties then in the warmer 2019 season. In 2020 we were able to enjoy another really nice, sunny and warm growing season without too many rain challenges. As a result, it was a very fine year providing excellent fruit maturity leading to well-structured wines displaying concentrated flavors and aromas.
